Achieve Long Term Cost Savings Through Quality Relationships

With over twenty years of procurement experience, I'm frequently asked what I value most in my work. Without hesitation, my answer is always the same: relationships. While many prioritise cost savings above all else, I believe that fostering solid and trustworthy connections is essential for success. Let me explain why relationships hold such significance in the procurement profession and how they can make a difference in navigating challenges and achieving long-term success.

The Foundation of Trust:

It's true that some see relationships as a distraction that hinders optimal deal-making. But let me be clear: I'm not referring to quid pro quo arrangements. I'm talking about relationships built on trust, respect, and transparency. These qualities are the foundation upon which successful partnerships are built.

In the procurement world, we invest countless hours perfecting written contracts and grasping the intricacies of implied agreements. However, it is the power and resilience of relationships that truly stand out, especially when things don't go as planned. Contracts can provide a framework, but it is the trust between parties that determines whether or not they can weather unexpected challenges.

Navigating Challenges Together:

We've all likely found ourselves in situations where we desperately wished for ironclad contracts with precise terms, conditions, and schedules. We hoped they would protect us and mitigate risks. Sadly, some of us have also experienced the pain of failed partnerships, even with seemingly foolproof contracts.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a poignant example of how relationships can make all the difference in procurement. Many suppliers abandoned their responsibilities during these challenging times, leaving their partners stranded. However, those with solid relationships remained steadfast, facing difficulties head-on alongside their partners. They could adapt, find solutions, and continue working towards their shared goals.

Thriving Through Trust and Commitment:

These successful relationships grew and thrived because of trust, respect, and a shared commitment to success and sustainability. When both parties are genuinely interested in each other's success, they are willing to go the extra mile, collaborate, and find mutually beneficial solutions. This level of commitment transcends contractual obligations and fosters a sense of loyalty and partnership.

“While many prioritise cost savings above all else, I believe that fostering solid and trustworthy connections is essential for success.”

Furthermore, strong relationships can lead to innovation and continuous improvement. When open lines of communication exist, both parties can share insights, identify opportunities for improvement, and drive positive change in their respective organisations.

While cost savings hold undeniable importance in procurement, it is the strength of our relationships that genuinely sets us apart. Building and nurturing relationships based on trust, respect, and transparency enables us to navigate challenges, adapt to unexpected circumstances, and ultimately achieve long-term success.

As a procurement professional, I prioritise cultivating meaningful relationships alongside our cost-saving efforts. By doing so, I can create a foundation of trust, collaboration, and resilience that will serve both my organisation and our supplier partners well in navigating the ever-changing procurement landscape.
